Shoftim In-Depth

  • 4Steps

How does one lead the Jewish people? ‘With difficulty’ is probably the most apt answer. The book of Shoftim (Judges) is the exploration of the Jewish people’s first steps at autonomous rule and at finding leaders to help them build their first state. From their entry into the land under Yehoshua until the last of the Judges, the Jewish people faced many challenges: internal divides, spiritual temptations, external and internal political threats, a non-existent economy and a dearth of strong mechanisms of government. Onto this stage were thrust the men and women who struggled to hold it all together, remain faithful to Hashem and to the nation and to their own consciences.
