R' Soloveitchik and the Rambam on Teshuvah

R' Soloveitchik and the Rambam on Teshuvah

A conversation through in-depth learning "On Repentance"

“Just as the sacrifice is burnt upon the altar, so do we burn down, by our act of confession, our well-barricaded complacency, our overblown pride, our artificial existence. Then, and only then: ‘Be you cleansed before the Lord.’”

Rabbi Dr. Joseph B. Soloveitchik was the foremost Jewish thinker of the late 20th century - a giant of Halachah, Talmud, philosophy, Jewish thought, communal leadership, and more. One of his seminal areas of thought was the how, why, where and who of teshuvah (repentance) and his paradigm-shifting approaches were recorded in the classic work Al HaTeshuvah (On Repentance).

Join The Academy for a Beit Midrash journey on teshuvah using the Rav's own methodology and works:

  • We’ll study sections of Rambam’s Hilchot Teshuvah (Laws of Repentance) in chevrutah, plumbing the classic Torah of Maimonides.

  • Through passages from Al HaTeshuvah, we’ll discover how Rav Soloveitchik addressed and analysed the same sources we studied, to lead to profound insights.

Experience how careful textual analysis (in the Brisker style) becomes existential philosophy; learn to learn how Rav Soloveitchik learnt and engage in a dialogue stretching over space and time with the greatest Torah sages. In this way, we follow the Rav in moving beyond the traditional concept of remorse and experience a heroic, creative act of self-transformation and emotional reconciliation with Hashem.
